Apply to the Honors Program

Honors Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an Honors course students must complete the specific course prerequisites AND must meet at least ONE of the criteria listed below.

GPA

Document a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 at the last academic institution attended (high school, college. or university). If the student has completed 6 credits at NOVA, NOVA GPA takes precedence over any other.

SAT SCORES***

Score at least 1200 out of 1600 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math sections with a score of at least 600 on each section.

ACT SCORE***

Demonstrate an ACT Composite Score of at least 25.

TEST PLACEMENT***

Place into Honor English based on placement test scores.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Provide a recommendation from the Honors chair, Honors counselor, or Honors instructor teaching the requested Honors course(s). This recommendation should indicate the student’s life experience, special aptitude, or interest that indicates a potential for success in an Honors course.

***IMPORTANT NOTE

Once a student completes 6 credits of college coursework, the GPA requirement takes precedence over all other criteria.

Once eligible, you are required to get permission to register for an Honors course from either a counselor or the Alexandria Honors Lead Faculty, Dr. T. Stantcheva.

Enrolling in Honors or Honors Option Classes

Honors Course

In addition to meeting the course prerequisites, students who wish to enroll in an Honors course must obtain a special permission. Contact the Alexandria Honors Lead Faculty. Dr. T. Stantcheva to obtain such a permission or ask your counselor, instructor, or Associate Dean.

Honors courses are small and space is limited. Register early if you wish to reserve a seat in such a class.

Honors Option Course

Honors Option Courses are regular courses taught by faculty that has agreed to work with students to earn Honors Option credit. Enrollment in such classes is open to anyone who meets the course prerequisites. If you are interested in earning Honors Option credit, let your instructor know at the beginning of the semester.

For the Honors Option, students and their instructor must complete the Honors Option Agreement form. Once the work is completed, your instructor must sign it and submit it to the campus Honors Lead Faculty for transcript designation.
