Room 327 and 428

AA 337 will be available as open lab starting Monday 8th, December until the end of the semester.

It will follow our Open Computer Lab hours Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM, Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

AA 337 and AA 428 will be our open labs for the Spring Semester.

What is going on with the Computer Labs

The project to improve and update the labs and testing center was finally approved. It took awhile to work out all the details, for this much needed update to some of the colleges most important service areas.

Unfortunately this project is being started now, which is November 19th during the end of the semester with all finals going on. Moreover, This project will approximately run until July 2015. So the Open Lab has scrambled to make some changes to allow students and faculty access to computers, as much as possible.

In previous posts, I highlighted some of the computer class rooms that have been converted to make shift open labs for the remainder of the semester. The hours and locations are not 100% at the moment but the computer lab staff is working out the details as we move classes around. Also, We are also working on the FastPrint services on the 4th floor in room 428 and the 1st floor in room 160.

Next semester we will try to have a dedicated room for the Open Computer Lab so that things will run a smoother as the renovation goes on.

Temporary Open Lab Hours room 160

Room 160 is being used as an open lab between classes until the end of the semester. A FastPrint printer is available in the room. We are currently finalizing printer software installation on the computers.

The hours are as follows:
Monday and Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 10:45 AM and 1:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Tuesday and Thursday: 3:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Other labs are available on the fourth floor between classes in rooms 414 – 416, 428, 444, 446 and 447. These rooms also have some of the classes that were moved from 156 and 159.  The hours are posted on the doors (some classes may not be on the schedule so sometimes there are classes in there). Printing in these rooms is a bit difficult at the moment as we set up FastPrint in the classrooms. Also if students and faculty need help with certain software, feel free to email aaberra@nvcc.edu about any questions on where you can find them with the recent changes. The labs in the engineering building will still maintain the same hours, but again email me for any questions on CAD software and availability/hours.

A little bit about the renovation project in my next post.

Welcome to Fall Semester

Due to the new college rule of on-time registration, Open Computer Labs has been open during the semester break assisting students with registration and enrollment. We have also been directing students to the correct offices as needed. We also assist with any online payment issues and parking permit purchases.

This semester also introduces a new printer system. Open Computer Labs has two printers available in room 155 and 156, as well as on the fourth floor by the vending machines.  Lab Instructors have been trained to assist students with any issues. I will post a more detailed post on how to use the new system in the future.

Smart Phone, Tablet Apps for School

Got a smart phone or tablet  for school. Make the most use of it with some of these cool apps.

Always on the go and need to access some stored files, but don’t have the space or time to get them loaded onto your tablet or phone? No worries, use one of these free apps to move files between devices. These apps also allow sharing with others for collaborative projects.

Google Drive is the extension of what Google Docs used to be. It has added a lot of new features but the most interesting feature is the use of Google Drive folder. This addon can be installed on your main PC or Mac. Once installed, anything you save in your Google Drive folder on your machine can be accessed online through drive.google.com or even through the Google Drive app on Tablets and Phones. You can even arrange items in folders and be able to access them anywhere you have an internet connection. You get about 15 GB free and can upgrade if more space is needed.

Another option is Dropbox which gives 2 gigs of free space to use and access anywhere. It has a similar app that can be installed on your PC or Mac or Linux device and can also be accessed on Tablets and Phones. Anything beyond 2 GB requires a monthly fee.

Evernote is a note taking app that also has cloud storage options for your notes and can also be accessed on multiple devices. The cool thing about evernote is that it syncs your notes on all devices. So I often use it to quickly jot down something on my phone or use it in conjunction with an extension for chrome on my computer, to save interesting sites or research I am working on.

Pocket is another app I use to save interesting articles from blogs or sites, to read later. I use an extension available on chrome to save it for later. I can then read it online or using the pocket app, I can read it on my phone or tablet.
