Things You Never Knew
In the “Things you never knew about your colleagues” category, Cynthia Williams (MEC), executive assistant to Provost Brian Foley, is also a dancer. Williams placed both first (in a dance partnership with a fellow student) and second (in a partnership with her instructor) in the Tri-State Connection Hand Dancing competition. What is hand dancing, you say? “D.C. Hand Dancing,” “D.C. Hand” or “D.C. Swing” is a form of Swing Dancing that dates back to the 1920s when the District of Columbia developed its own version and named it “Hand Dance.” It is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as an American Art Form and in 1999 became the official dance of D.C.
