Stacy J. Slaten

Artist Biography

Stacy Slaten is an artist and educator serving as Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA. She is a mixed media artist whose first love is drawing. Born in Georgetown, Texas, Stacy has lived all over the state of Texas, particularly in West Texas and received her undergraduate degrees at Texas Tech University. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting, another in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing, a minor in Psychology, and a third Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies with an interdisciplinary minor in Substance Abuse Studies. She then went to Ohio for her graduate work at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting, teaching there while she completed her degree. She also has taught at Howard College and University of Texas Permian Basin in West Texas.

While interested in a variety of mediums, she currently chooses the materials that fit the content or idea, and her understanding of the human form underlies all work with an emphasis in figurative studies, although she is now investigating the anatomy of birds. “I am interested in the content that the human figure implies through the body and of the self. The body is a vessel that carries everything we are inside and out, both substantial and insubstantial. I love the anatomy of the body for both its medical and expressive qualities.”

Teaching both inspires and serves as a challenge in the creative process that motivates Stacy to continue exploring art making. She currently lives in Alexandria with her parrot and continues to investigate drawing as a primary expression.
