Fairfax Bar Association (FBA) Paralegal Section

We would like to invite you to attend our annual Support Staff Orientation Program on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 1:30 PM to 5:15 PM at the Fairfax County Courthouse (Room 404).

This program will include a tour of the Courts, an overview of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department, the Fairfax General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, and Circuit Court. Additionally, this event will feature a presentation by the Circuit Court’s IT Department, including an overview of online services, including CPAN, and an expansive demo on the Circuit Court’s online filing system, presented by Gerarda Culipher of the Circuit Court in conjunction with the IT Department.

Donna Rostant, Principal at Jones and Rostant.  Donna will give us an overview of med school 101.

Joyvan Malbon-Griffen.  Joyvan is a Regional Director and Claims attorney with Minnesota Lawyers Mutual and will discuss an Overview of the Ethical Implications of Social Media.

Jennifer Fairfax, Partner at Jennifer Fairfax LLC, Jennifer specializes her practice in Adoption and Assisted Reproductive Technology.  She will be discussing the overturning of Roe v. Wade and how it may affect other laws, including LGBTQ laws.

This event will be hybrid and simultaneously available to registrants via Zoom.

As you know, we’re currently collecting funds for our Annual Back-to-School Supply Drive in collaboration with the Fairfax Law Foundation, for benefit of local preschool and school-aged children in need.

Our backpack stuffing meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at 5:00 PM at Curran Moher Weis, 10300 Eaton Place, Suite 520, Fairfax, VA 22030. Meals and refreshments will provided by the law firm. Valentine’s Day Book Drive

Please join the section, in conjunction with the Fairfax Law Foundation, in celebrating our annual Valentine’s Day Project benefiting young men and women in Fairfax County residential correctional programs. Our mission is to change lives and open windows to unfamiliar worlds and innovative ideas through the gift of reading. In 2020, after receiving a tote bag containing books, a journal, and other sundries, one young man replied with a heartfelt thank you note which read “You healed my heart”.                        Your tax-deductible donation can be made online using VISA, MasterCard, or Discover. The American Bar Association (ABA) conducted a site visit at the Alexandria Campus on Monday and Tuesday, March 2-3, 2020. The team met with College administrators, staff, faculty and advisory committee members. The site team also met with current paralegal students and program graduates. The site visit is part of the ABA Approval Process.

PARALEGAL STUDIES PANEL DISCUSSION

Registration Begins at 8:30 a.m.

We will provide an overview of the Paralegal Studies program, what to expect in class, career guidance, and much more.

Attorneys will describe the qualifications and skills they are looking for. Paralegals will explain how their education and work experience helped them find a job.

You will also learn about the benefits of paralegal certification and membership in professional organizations.

Refreshments will be provided.

Even if you are currently enrolled at NOVA, this is an opportunity for you to learn more about the paralegal program and the profession.

The Panel Discussion is free of charge, but because seats are limited you must RSVP no later than Monday, April 1.

Paralegal Section Career Advancement CLE

Please join us on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 PM for our Career Advancement CLE, “Numbers Are Your Friends”: A primer for gaining better understanding of financial issues as related to legal matters and discovery. This program will take place in the Fifth Floor Jury Assembly Room of the Fairfax County Courthouse, and has been approved for 2.0 NFPA CLE credits.

This program will be presented by Stan CoreyBefore retiring, Stan Corey was a Certified Financial Planner™ Professional (CFP®), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA). His career in the financial services industry spans almost 40 years. Stan is a sought-after expert who regularly provides financial commentary at national conferences, in print and online publications, and on TV. He has appeared in USA Today, Working Women magazine, MONEY, Good Housekeeping, and Northern Virginia magazine. He is the author of The Divorce Dance, was past President of NVMS, and co-wrote and taught Economic Issues in Divorce, a course for mediation certification.
