2014 CHILDREN’S CONCERT | Thursday, 6 March 2014

NOVA-Alexandria to host Children’s Concert Students to take center stage during performance

The NOVA Alexandria Band and the John Adams Elementary Orff Ensemble will perform a variety of musical selections as part of the Children’s Concert. The concert reflects the Alexandria Campus’s commitment to its community and is also a celebration of music education in the city’s local schools.image001 (4)

Among the selections include “The Elephant and the Flea,” “Saxophobia,” “The Whistler and his Dog,”and “Largo al Factotum,” from the opera “The Barber of Seville.”  The evening will include a recognition ceremony for student finalists from the Alexandria City Public Schools in the visual and performing arts categories of the National PTA Reflections Programs.

The Grand Finale will include a combined performance by the NOVA Alexandria Band, the John Adams Elementary Orff Ensemble and area elementary and middle school students. The concert is free and open to the public.

Parking is FREE in the Beauregard Street Garage.

Event Description:

The Northern Virginia Community College Alexandria Campus, in partnership with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will host a special naturalization ceremony on Friday, 24 January 2014. This event will feature participation by faculty, staff and students at NOVA. USCIS will welcome candidates for naturalization from a variety of countries who will take the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Parking will be available in the Beauregard Street garage lower levels and the B-6 lot.

*This event has limited space dedicated to the NEW citizens and their guests only. A capacity audience is expected.

NOVA-Alexandria music ensembles to play Holiday Concert

Living Legends of Alexandria nominees celebrated

 Christmas Concert

What:  Celebrate the holiday season listening to much-beloved favorites such as “Deck the Halls” and “Jingle Bells” at this year’s Holiday Concert on the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.  The musical event will feature the NOVA Community Chorus, the NOVA Alexandria Jazz Ensemble and the Alexandria Band. Other songs to be performed include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Selections from Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” will also be performed and the evening will be capped by an audience sing-along.  Attendees will also be introduced to the 2014 Living Legends of Alexandria nominees during the evening. The initiative is an on-going not-for-profit photo-documentary project to identify, honor, and chronicle the people making current history in Alexandria. The 2014 Legends will be selected later this month and honored early next year at the annual Meet the Legend Reception.

 

When:  The concert will take place Tuesday, Dec. 10. A reception to greet the Living Legends nominees begins at 6:30 p.m. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Cost:  The concert is free and open to the public. Free garage parking will also be available. The garage is closed from Campus Drive, but accessible from the Beauregard Street entrance.

Pottery made by students and teachers at the Alexandria Ceramics Program are donated to this event.

 

All funds raised by this event are deposited in the Ceramic Studio Fund held by The NOVA Educational Foundation.

Funds are used to purchase supplies and for equipment repairs.

Spooktacular Sounds concert

The Alexandria NOVA Band to play Halloween concert

What:

Spend a night listening to frighteningly good music at the “Spooktacular Sounds in the Haunted Hall: A Halloween Concert.” The Alexandria NOVA Band will play a selection of music from various composers, including Hector Berlioz, Henry Fillmore, Michael Markowski, Giacomo Puccini, Camille Saint-Saens and Robert W. Smith.

 

The band includes both NOVA students and community members. Lisa C. Eckstein, a music instructor at NOVA-Alexandria, will direct the band. A movement piece will also be presented by NOVA students and directed by Kate Al-Shamma, assistant professor in the Communication Studies and Theatre Department at NOVA-Alexandria.

 

Attendees are encouraged to come in costume to receive special prizes. Everyone who attends will leave with trick-or-treat goodie bags.

Three finalists will be selected to perform their winning act at NOVA Idol finals in the Schlesinger Center at Alexandria Campus on Friday, 21 March 2014.

Auditionee’s will have 2-minutes to impress the judges and the audience. All acts will be recorded.

So, we invite all employees with any and all talents to bring it on!
