Writing Assistance

For writing help, you may request either an in-person appointment or an online appointment via Zoom. To schedule an appointment, log in to MyNOVA and select EAB Navigate Student. Then click on “Schedule an Appointment” and select “Tutoring.”

To work with Alexandria-campus writing consultants, look for Denise Brown, Maria Fahlsing, Carol O’Shaughnessy, Debra Pawlik, and Walter (Clinton) Parker. To work with students who are writing tutors, look for Nikolai Fraley, Jasmine Mendoza, or Matt Nucci. If you have questions, email FrontDeskASC@nvcc.edu.

At the ASC Writing Center, you will find qualified consultants and tutors who work with you to develop effective reading, writing, and critical thinking strategies. Writing consultants and tutors can help you plan your writing project, structure your essay, prepare an outline, revise your writing, learn how to proofread and edit (they cannot do this for you), clarify your paper ideas, format papers and citations properly, and/or discuss literature and poetry. Even if you’re a confident writer, they can offer you helpful feedback.

If you need an asynchronous paper review (you don’t need to meet with the writing consultant), please submit your paper to Tutor.com, which is a free outside tutoring service provided to NOVA students. You can find the link to Tutor.com in your Canvas course. If your instructor requires proof of your paper review, take a screenshot of your tutor’s feedback to submit with your paper.

Our Services:

Writing Appointments. Each NOVA student may have two tutoring appointments per week. Writing appointments are 50 minutes long and can be made up to two weeks in advance. Appointments fill up, so reserve your appointment early!

Application Essays, Resumes, and Cover Letters. We will help you with your admissions and scholarship essays, as well as job search documents. These are the one exception to our policy of not editing or proofreading. With these documents, we will help you to make the best impression possible!
