Mesa Community College’s Model United Nations team excelled at the 64th Annual Model United Nations Far West Conference in San Francisco this past weekend. Mesa participants represented Pakistan, Mexico, Jordan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the conference, debating over a dozen topics, including Security Council reform, eliminating nuclear weapons, development goals for persons with disabilities, space debris and the post-2015 development agenda. They were called to testify at the Security Council on the topics of the Mexican drug trade, Syrian refugee crisis, and rebels in Eastern Congo. They were recognized as leaders in their committees and for their academic preparation. In their research, writing, and diplomatic skills, these program participants upheld the reputation of excellence Mesa’s program enjoys at this conference.
The program participants on the team included members of the State Department’s CCI Program and other international students, who used Model UN to advance their English speaking and writing skills and develop leadership skills. Team members were Radwa Abdrabou, Raymond Arecco, Ariel Cotton, Justin Cox, Lorena Cuervo, Salvador Galvan, Fitri Imelda, Wendell Jones, Fajar Kristiano, David Maroon, David McKaig, Spencer Morgan, Ghulam Murtaza, Thanh Nguyen, Thadeus Owino and Pedro Sanchez.
