Nighthawk Drive-Up Laptop Loaner Program

April 2, 2020 / General NOVA News

NOVA offices made a joint effort to bring together resources to procure laptops for loan and to implement the ‘Nighthawk Drive-Up Laptop Loaner Program’ to safely distribute laptops to students who needed them in order to resume their NOVA studies online.  Because of the necessary restrictions that needed to be put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this program ensured that students would not need to exit their vehicles to obtain a laptop.

After receiving a large number of applications for the NOVA Educational Foundation’s new COVID-19 Emergency Student Aid Fund, it was noted that many students indicated they were applying for aid because they needed a laptop to participate in online courses this semester. To address this need, over the weekend, Student Services teams reached out to students that expressed a need for a computer.  After the assessment, many NOVA employees and offices developed a plan of action to assist these students. The offices of Student Services, Single Stop, Administration, Emergency Management, Facilities Planning and Support Services and Information Technology all had a part in ensuring students could continue their studies with the equipment they needed.

NOVA IT pulled together 516 computers for this program, and Parking Services, together with OEM, worked to erect tents on the Annandale and Manassas campuses on Monday and Tuesday, March 30 and 31.  Emergency Management provided safety briefings and tents in an effort to ensure employees could interact with the public with the necessary gloves and masks, as well as wiping down equipment as they went along.  The LTR Deans assisted with distribution.

Among the NOVA faculty, staff and family members who volunteered to distribute laptops for students during this time were:  Matt Todd (AL-LTR Dean); Kristin Snawder (AL); Kay Martinez (WO); Kevin O’Hagan (AL); Lynn Bowers (MA-LTR Dean); Melissa Reyna (MA); Lauren Reyna (MA); Emily Reyna (MA); Kathleen Odige (MEC-LTR Dean); Cameisha Chin (WO); Sahro Egal (WO); Kevin O’Hagan (AL); Kathy Bohnstedt (WO-LTR Dean); Abid Mahmood (AL); Maureen Townsend (MA); Luis Cruz (MA). NOVA extends special thanks to these community members who volunteered.

If students missed out on this opportunity and still need resources like laptops, please contact NOVA’s Single Stop Office at singlestop@nvcc.edu or call at (703) 323-3450 if you know of students who still need laptops.

WiFi is offered in all six NOVA Campus parking lots.
