CARES Act to Benefit NOVA, Students
President Kress, College Government Affairs and staff from NOVA Finance and Administration are gathering information to clarify what is or could possibly be included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) to benefit the college and NOVA students. The bill was signed into law by President Trump on March 27th.
Developed over five days, it has many sections that need to be clarified and are subject to federal rulemaking. Of the approximately $14 billion dedicated to colleges and universities, 90 percent will ultimately go to institutions of higher education. Three-quarters of these funds will be distributed to schools based on their enrollment of Pell students. Also, institutions must use at least half of their funds to provide emergency financial grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.
College staff will be focused both on determining the array of benefits that could be available for assisting students and on securing reimbursement for college expenses related to NOVA’s response to the disease’s impact–making all learning remote.
