Advising Week and Summer Registration, April 13-17
Advising Week and Summer Registration both begin on Monday, April 13! Please remind your students to reach out to their advisor for help registering as soon as possible as courses fill quickly. Click here for the Schedule of Classes for Summer 2020, along with helpful how-to information.
In addition, let students know that there will be fun and informative activities going on in the Virtual Student Union during Advising Week.

NOVA’s Virtual Advisors have some tips to help make advising ‘remotely’ easier:
- Reach out to your advisees! Just knowing that you want to connect can make a difference.
- Create a dependable list of favorite websites to reference during communications with students. Examples are:
o NOVA catalog with course descriptions and programs of study: https://www.nvcc.edu/catalog/
o Your Academic division page
o Medical Education Campus program application requirements: https://www.nvcc.edu/medical/apply/index.html
o Popular transfer institution webpages:
https://www2.gmu.edu/admissions-aid/how-apply/transfer
https://www.jmu.edu/admissions/apply/transfer.shtml
https://www.odu.edu/transfer
https://transfer.vcu.edu/
https://vt.edu/admissions/transfer.html
o Student tutorials for how to add/drop/swap a class: https://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect/students/tuts/index.html
o Disability Support Services: https://www.nvcc.edu/disability-services/
o Financial Stability Program: https://www.nvcc.edu/financial-stability/
o Financial Aid support: https://www.nvcc.edu/financialaid/support/index.html
- Develop a “frequent response” document of phrases you repeat especially for complicated processes (how to remove holds, third time course repeat processes, transcript evaluation, etc.)
- Communicate with other advisors using Zoom or chat in case you get “stuck”
- Don’t be afraid to tell a student you will have to get back to them with a response–but definitely make sure to follow up!
