Summer Professional Development: Online and Hybrid Teaching

If you are a NOVA faculty member who values lifelong learning and wants to hone your skills in teaching online and hybrid courses, we have good news for you! NOVA Online is offering the following professional development sessions before the start of the fall semester:

Hybrid Certification Course
Session 1: May 4 – 31
Session 2: June 1 – June 28
Session 3: July 6 – Aug. 2

Effectively Facilitating Online Discussions
Session 1: Aug. 3 – 9
Session 2: Aug. 10 – 16

As the college transitioned to remote teaching and learning due to COVID-19 in March, one faculty shared his experience with the Hybrid Certification Course: “Thank you for your dedication and guidance and flexibility. You are a wonderful model of an effective online instructor… I hope to emulate your dedication and caring for my future students.” Another faculty who took the online course last summer also wrote: “I learned so much from the Hybrid Certification Course you taught, that converting to distance learning for 7 courses is going smoothly. Thank you again for all your assistance!”

Effectively Facilitating Online Discussions is a new workshop we began offering this spring. Faculty participants anonymously expressed their positive experience:

“LOVED the clear organization and varied format – It was great to have teacher-made videos with incredibly helpful visuals to show ‘main points,’ and then links to other videos/articles/websites for further information. I liked how this was a week long, organized with clear deadlines halfway through.”

“This workshop was very interesting and I like all of the topics. The workshop is a must-take and it has provided me with the skills to improve my online discussions.”

“I enjoyed the social presence of the instructor in the course. It was very effective in sustaining my interest and attention.”

All sessions are offered online asynchronously in Canvas. An additional session of the Hybrid Certification Course has been added in May to meet the needs of faculty who plan to be hybrid certified before the summer term starts.
