HR Training Tip–Creating an Individual Development Plan
Do you know what direction you should take to improve your skills? Do you have a plan that aligns your goals with your department’s goals? Are you aware of the professional development resources available to you? If you answered no to any of these questions, an individual development plan (IDP) is a good way to start thinking about where you are today, where you want to be and how you will get there. Individual development planning is like a personal career strategy guide, created by you. It is a written development plan that helps you identify short- and long-term career goals and what action steps you need to take to accomplish your goals. As part of your IDP, you will identify your individual goals and focus on your professional development. Your IDP should be based on your own reflection and self-assessment.
Check out the online Creating Your Individual Development Plan module available through NOVA Academy/COVLC. Log on to NOVA Academy at https://covlc.virginia.gov, enter keywords “nova IDP” in the Search box on the upper right corner, press Enter and select the module to access it.
More information on IDPs can also be found at the HR OL&D SharePoint site. (You must be connected to the college network via VPN.) Contact HR OL&D at hrlearn@nvcc.edu if you need assistance, resources, ideas on how to complete your IDP.
