What To Do If Your Password Expires While Working Remotely

April 20, 2020 / HR News/Training

If you have gotten the prompt on a Windows system to change your NVCC.edu password, you have a few options: (Directions for myNOVA are on the myNOVA login page.)

If you did not see a message in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen telling you your password was due to expire and you are past the date, follow these steps:

  1. Call the IT Help Desk at 703-426-4141 for assistance in resetting your password.
Note: Be aware that, since you are in a remote work environment, your computer will not get the updated password right away. So, you need to use your OLD password to login to the computer the first time. It will let you into your computer.
  2. Once you are logged into your computer, use the NEW password you just reset through the IT Help Desk to open e-mail, VPN or SharePoint.
  3. Once you connect your computer to VPN, leave it on for a while to allow the network to talk to your computer. You must do this in order for the NEW password to take effect on your computer.
  4. After an hour or so, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys at the same time and then select Lock Screen.
  5. Now try logging back into your computer with the NEW password and see what happens. If it works, you are good to go. If not, use the old password and wait until later to try again. The NEW Password will still work for email, VPN or SharePoint.

After you have successfully logged into your computer with your new password, please follow the initial directions regarding the use of VPN – get on and get off. Do not stay logged into the VPN.

Note: The time it takes to update the password on your computer itself can vary widely and could take as long as 24 hours. Please be patient and wait a few hours if you are not successful on the first try. You will only need to use your OLD password to open the computer itself. All the software will use the NEW password. Be sure to change the password on any mobile devices where you read email or use other NVCC applications.
