NOVA Faculty and Tutor Coordinators Work with Fairfax County Fire
NOVA has partnered with the Fairfax County Fire Department to help prepare the next generation of officers. The initiative involved 10 lieutenants completing the Officer II certification course, which is a prerequisite for promotion to captain. Each lieutenant was paired with an English, education or ESL faculty member or tutor coordinator to review and provide feedback on his or her leadership writing prompt.
Captain Marc Davidson from the Fairfax County Fire Department reached out to Drs. Evette Hyder-Davis (MA) and Joann Credle (AN) to request assistance. The fire department’s goal was to lay a foundation to help identify writing weaknesses and to help encourage the lieutenants to seek improvement before they move up within the organization. LASS Deans Jimmie McClellan (AL), Jennifer Daniels (AN), Katherine Hitchcock (LO) and David Epstein (WO) gave a stamp of approval on the initiative and helped Hyder-Davis and Credle recruit some of the most outstanding individuals from their campus (listed below) to assist. The faculty and coordinators are conducting meetings, reviewing drafts and helping FCFD staff members to develop writing skills that will last throughout their careers as firefighters.
