NOVA Haikus Round Two to Celebrate Fall!

September 14, 2020 / Uncategorized

In my Zoom office hours last week, I had a number of requests to repeat last spring’s haiku contest. I will never turn down a chance to promote poetry. So, welcome to NOVA Haikus Round 2!

The rules:

  • Haiku is a traditional Japanese poetic form with three lines: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables. The lines do not typically rhyme. Your haiku should follow this form. Here’s an example by the poet Kawasaki Tenko:

The water wheel spins
holding up the milky way,
and then spills it out.

  • Your round two haiku should celebrate fall (in big ways or small).
  • You can enter only one haiku.
  • Your deadline is 5 p.m. on the first day of fall: Sept. 22.
  • Send your entry to me at PresidentsOffice@nvcc.edu

This time, it’s not a contest, it’s a celebration, so no judging. Instead, the name of each participant will be dropped into a bowl from which I’ll draw the name of one writer who will get a small wall quilt made by me in appreciation of the remarkable talents within our community.

As before, I will compile and publish all entries so that you have some wonderful poems to read on these lengthening fall nights.

Thank you for the suggestion to bring us back to NOVA poetry and for all you’re doing to keep our community connected and strong! Now, grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte and start writing.
