Día de los Muertos Virtual Altar Competition 2020

October 2, 2020 / Events

Día de los Muertos, translated in English means Day of the Dead. This year, it runs from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2. It is a traditional Mexican holiday when family and friends gather to pray and remember loved ones that have parted. Families build altars to honor the dead with food, drink, flowers, candles, personal mementos and other offerings as a celebration of life and death. This year, we would like to have a Día de los Muertos Virtual Altar Competition. Here are the details:

There will be two categories of Altars:

Physical Altars: These may be any size, traditional, contemporary or whatever style you like. In addition, they do not have to be dedicated to deceased persons. They can be dedicated to an idea, a culture, a lost tradition or whatever moves you! Be creative! Take a video of your altar showing all its different aspects and submit to the Virtual Student Union by entering your VCCS credentials.

Prezi Altar: You can create a free account at www.prezi.com (be sure to go to the student/educator page). Create your presentation, download it and submit it to the Virtual Student Union. Be sure to include a brief description of your altar.

All altars must be submitted to the Virtual Student Union no later than midnight, Nov. 2. Voting will take place from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6 via Google forms, and voting will be open to all members of the NOVA community. Winners will be announced on Nov. 9. All submissions must contain your full name, EMPLID, mailing address, phone number, NOVA or VCCS email address and a brief description of your submission. Also, please also name your altar so it can be displayed anonymously for voting. Altars must be respectful and not contain inappropriate content
