Office of Wellness and Mental Health Offer Mental Health First Aid Training

October 9, 2020 / General NOVA News

The Office of Wellness and Mental Health is pleased to announce two Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings this fall for NOVA staff and faculty. Mental Health First Aid is a certification course that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives participants the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be experiencing a mental health concern, substance use problem or other crisis. MHFA will help us get a step closer to ensuring student success at NOVA.

Let’s make Mental Health First Aid as common as CPR!!

Participants will complete a two-hour, self-paced online class, and then about a week later participate in two, three-hour instructor-led video conferences. Once you have registered, the trainer will send instructions and learning materials to your registered email.

What it Covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with a person in crisis (i.e., suicidal or psychiatric concerns)
  • How to connect the person with help
  • NEW: Expanded content on trauma, addiction and self-care

The first cohort of virtual training will be offered on Friday, Oct. 23 and  Friday, Oct. 30, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. (registration closes at close of business, Oct. 16). The second cohort of virtual training will be offered Thurs., Nov. 12 and Thurs., Nov. 19 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. (registration closes at close of business, Nov. 5).

Each course is limited to the first 20 registrants. We look forward to offering more of these trainings in spring semester as well. Email the MHFA Registration Form and direct any questions or concerns to the Office of Wellness and Mental Health at wellness@nvcc.edu.
