NOVA Awarded Multi-Year Grant from Department of Ed. for Student Child Care Expenses

Northern Virginia Community College has been given a multi-year award as part of the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant is intended to alleviate some financial burdens for college students who are also parents of young children to allow them to focus on their studies and, in turn, increase their likelihood of academic success and, ultimately, graduation. Grants may be used for before- and after-school services. In addition, grants may be used to serve the child care needs of the community served by the institution.

“NOVA continues to be committed to its diverse student population,” said Dr. Frances Villagran-Glover, vice president of student services. “This federal funding for child care expenses for our working student parents comes at a time when it is needed the most. Historically, NOVA has utilized the college’s Foundation funding to assist students who are parents, and has previously supported Achieving the Dream’s College Success for Single Mothers program through the institution’s networks and on social media.”

Through this grant, NOVA’s Division of Student Services will award up to 50 student parents with funds to secure quality child care services in CCAMPIS-approved child care centers. In addition, student parents who apply for and receive funding will receive access to additional supports through NOVA’s Adult Career Pathways program and the Financial Stability and Advocacy Center. These programs will provide academic advising, relevant programming, connection to government and community services and financial planning and budgeting education.
