Ad Hoc Committee to Make Recommendations on Academic Scheduling

September 11, 2024 / General NOVA News

As part of our ongoing effort to enhance student success, an ad hoc committee has been formed to evaluate and provide recommendations on improving our collegewide scheduling practices, including the question of whether academic scheduling should be wholly or partly centralized. This committee, comprised of academic deans, associate deans, advisors, faculty members, coordinators of scheduling and enrollment management, and other key representatives, is tasked with ensuring that our academic schedule aligns with student course-taking patterns and supports timely completion of academic programs.

The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure that course offerings meet student needs while preventing overlap or competition between campus schedules. This way, we can create a more effective and student-centered scheduling system that improves credit-hour progress, a critical factor in successful college completion. At the same time, we aim to support students in following clear pathways to graduation through thoughtfully structured course availability.

Faculty perspectives will remain integral to this process, with faculty representatives actively participating in the committee. Their insights will ensure that the recommendations incorporate faculty needs and uphold the core academic mission of the College. The College Senate has appointed several members to the committee, and they should be reporting out at Senate meetings to ensure open communication to and from stakeholders.

This committee is being co-chaired by Provosts Julie Leidig and Richmond Hill. The first meeting of this ad hoc committee will be held on Wednesday, September 18, and the committee will submit its recommendations to the Office of the President by November 22.
