Grants Office Semi-Annual Roll Call
The Grants Office is pleased to announce 16 new grants NOVA has received during the second half of FY23-24 and the beginning of FY24-25. Each project serves a unique purpose, addressing specific programmatic or institutional needs that, ultimately, benefit students. Congratulations to the faculty and staff grant recipients!
FEDERAL GRANTS
Department of Labor, Apprenticeship Building America (ABA2), ET Career Scholars: Developing a Pre-apprenticeship Program for the Data Center & Semiconductor Industries, $3,999,980. Joshua Labrie, Project Director. Expand student access to technician careers in the semiconductor manufacturing and data center industries through scholarships, pre-apprenticeships, paid apprenticeships and other supports.
Department of State, Community College Initiative, $5,625,000. Sara Mohamed, Project Director. Provide a comprehensive program for visiting international students to develop leadership capabilities, job-related skills and English language proficiency while attending a community college in the United States.
National Science Foundation – Advanced Technological Education, BUILD: Futures in Welding and Fabrication, $617,138. Santiago Rivera, Project Director. Revitalize the welding program through curriculum and certificate redesign, industry internships and high school outreach.
National Science Foundation, Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies (ExLENT), COHORT Advanced Manufacturing Careers, $1,000,000. Jack Bidlack, Project Director. Develop a program for graduating high school seniors to earn credentials and work experience in engineering technology fields.
National Science Foundation – IUSE: Innovation in Two-Year College STEM Education, Fulfilling Laboratory Assistantships for Science College Students: Strengthening Transfer Pathways, $499,990. Amany Saleh, Project Director. Provide additional resources and support for students in the laboratory sciences transferring to GMU through advising, community building support groups and research assistant experiences.
National Science Foundation – Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM), George Mason University (prime), S-STEM Collaborative Research, $15,323. Emilia Butu, Project Director. Collaborate with GMU to create pathways for low-income NOVA students with STEM degrees, specifically in information technology.
NASA, George Washington University (prime), Securing High-Density Urban Airspaces, $149,925. Kwabena Konadu, Project Director. Collaborate with GWU to enhance opportunities for students to engage in research projects with faculty mentors, including through internships and attending academic conferences.
STATE GRANTS
SCHEV, George Mason University (prime), Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Traineeship Program, $96,000. Scott Wood, Project Director. Provide a 7-week cybersecurity training program and career placement support for students entering the cybersecurity and data analytics field.
SCHEV, Virginia’s Academic Library Consortium (VIVA), Expanding Access for First-Year English Composition Students, $39,678. Susannah Givens, Project Director. Develop open educational resources for first-year English composition courses to reduce expenses for students.
VA Department of Criminal Justice, NOVA Campus Mapping Project, $55,805. Tony Ong, Project Director. Enhance the security, preparedness and emergency response capabilities of the NOVA Police Department through digital mapping of campus structures.
VA Department of Education, Perkins FY 24-25, $854,910. Joshua Labrie, Project Director. Provide Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming to underrepresented post-secondary students.
VA Department of Health, NOVA Earn to Learn, $213,180. Charemon Brooks, Project Director. Provide paid clinical training and other supports to expand the pipeline of students earning Registered Nurse (RN) credentials.
FOUNDATION GRANTS
American Association of Community Colleges, Metallica Scholars Initiative, $10,000. Keila Louzada, Project Director. Provide scholarships for students in the Practical Nurse (LPN) and Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) healthcare programs.
Center for Bridging Cultures, Chinese Language and Experiential Learning Opportunities, $9,513. Dali Tan, Project Director. Deepen the learning experiences of Chinese language students through culturally-oriented field trips and career networking opportunities.
Education Credit Management Corp. Foundation, FAFSA Student Support Strategy, $110,471. Sherika Charity, Project Director. Conduct outreach and additional FAFSA completion workshops for students and families to address challenges with the rollout of the new FAFSA.
Progressive Policy Institute (PPI), Pricing Workforce Education, $30,000. Steven Partridge, Project Director. Assess the non-credit workforce education program operating expenses to determine whether rates are competitive.
