Call for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Proposals by Oct. 14
In addition to transfer courses, students may earn college credit for standardized exams, industry certifications, military training, professional courses and more. To ensure equity for all students, non-traditional learning experiences not currently listed in the CPL manual—excluding work/life experience—must undergo a formal proposal process. This process begins with the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) and Curriculum Committees and ends with final review by the Administrative Council.
Any student, faculty or staff member may initiate a request to evaluate an unlisted non-traditional learning experience. Such requests should first be brought to the attention of the appropriate pathway dean, who will collaborate with the CPL coordinator and committee chair to draft a proposal and submit it to the CPL Committee for review.
Faculty and staff may encounter the following scenarios that could lead to an evaluation request:
- Student Interactions: Discovering students with professional certifications, work experience or military training that could meet course requirements.
- Advising Conversations: Identifying students whose prior learning or industry credentials may align with existing courses.
- Course Development: While updating or developing curriculum, you may find areas where prior learning could fulfill course competencies.
- Collaborations with Industry: Industry connections may highlight specific workforce training programs that align with course outcomes.
If you have any pending proposals or are considering initiating a request, we encourage you to act now and submit them to the CPL Committee for review at its next meeting on October 21. Typically, proposals must be submitted at least two weeks before a meeting; however, given the late call, we have extended the submission deadline to October 14. Thank you for your consideration.
