Collegewide Scheduling Committee Update: Progress and Next Steps

October 21, 2024 / General NOVA News

The Collegewide Scheduling Ad Hoc Committee is pleased to provide an update on its ongoing work. Our committee has been charged by Dr. Kress with evaluating different models for class scheduling in order to recommend the approach that best supports student success, degree completion and the efficient use of campus resources, while considering faculty preferences and campus demographics.

The committee has organized three teams amongst its members, each tasked with developing and reviewing one of the following scheduling models:

  • Team A: NOVA Online-Style, Discipline-Driven Model
  • Team B: Hybrid Model: Central Scheduling Office with Campus Input
  • Team C: Decentralized Model with Improved Cross-College Communication

After having an overview of the three models, committee members are actively assessing the strengths, challenges and potential benefits of each model. Each approach has strengths and weaknesses, so our final recommendation may combine aspects of all three models. Ultimately, we will make a recommendation based on what we believe will serve the best interests of our students and the college community.

We want to emphasize the importance of faculty and staff input in this process. Committee members have been strongly encouraged to engage in conversations with their campus communities to gather feedback and share updates on our work. We invite any member of the college community to share their thoughts or recommendations with provosts Richmond Hill or Julie Leidig via email.

Thank you for your attention to this important work. We look forward to continuing these discussions as we work toward a solution that enhances student success and supports our institutional goals.
