How do they express their sense of self to others? Come experience artwork that explores identity through ideas like race, gender, religion, nationalism and others. In “Investigating Identity,” art students were encouraged to examine their growth as artists as well as their understandings of such elements of identity as community, culture, interest and perspective.

The show, a joint effort between NOVA and George Mason University juried by local artist Mary Higgins, is open from March 29 through May 3 at Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center (9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, VA 22079). An open reception for “Investigating Identity” will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the McGuireWoods Gallery (second floor, Building W-16). Join students, staff and faculty from NOVA and George Mason for refreshments and an award presentation.

Demovidova’s “Solace” Now on Display at LO’s Waddell Gallery https://blogs.nvcc.edu/dailyflyer/2024/11/19/demovidovas-solace-now-on-display-at-los-waddell-gallery/ https://blogs.nvcc.edu/dailyflyer/2024/11/19/demovidovas-solace-now-on-display-at-los-waddell-gallery/#respond Tue, 19 Nov 2024 06:00:37 +0000 https://blogs.nvcc.edu/dailyflyer/?p=56705 Continued]]> The Waddell Gallery on NOVA’s Loudoun Campus is excited to announce Anna Demovidova’s solo exhibition, Solace. The show opened on Monday, November 18, and will be on display until Friday, December 13. Please stop by to meet the artist for the opening reception this Thursday, November 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. (See the flyer below for more details.)

Demovidova’s work is a vivid exploration of the dynamic inner world of women, capturing their subtle shifts in mood, emotion and thought as they navigate life’s complexities. Her subjects often appear in quiet contemplation — moments of solitude that evoke the depth of the human soul without veering into loneliness or despair. While inspired by Henri Matisse’s vision of art as a “calming influence,” Demovidova acknowledges the suffering in today’s world. The invasion of Ukraine brought the artist an irrecoverable sense of loss; her work, which balances beauty and sorrow, reveals Demovidova’s pain but points to strength and hope as it emphasizes the resilience often found in quiet, solitary moments.

At top is an image of an original drawing by Anna Demovidova: At right, a woman sits on the floor in front of a sunlit window; her gaze is to the left, and she appears deep in thought as she grasps her feet with her hands. At the left is perhaps an abstracted construction of the woman's mind, rendered in bright and varied shapes, including a blue ball and oval, a vertical green splotch, and a brown ribbonlike element that frames the innermost pieces. Behind the central elements is a field of bright yellow, which itself is partially obstructed by a gray mesh pattern.
