The NOVA Nighthawks League of Legends JV team has also advanced to the semi-finals of the Tier-3 Open Series NJCAAE Tournament, defeating Moberly Area Community College in a dominant 3-0 fashion, and defeating North Iowa Area Community College in a lopsided 3-0 series as well. JV faced SUNY Herkimer County Community College in a tough semi-final matchup on Monday, December 9, at 8 p.m.
The playoff success thus far reflects a long, difficult semester of hard work for the League of Legends teams, with many standout players performing during key moments in their respective series. Congrats to our esports teams! #LetsGoNighhawks

Both campaigns are now live across Northern Virginia. They are running on buses, metro cars, radio stations, social media, Google Search and more! We encourage you to engage and spread the word about NOVA in your local communities. Our faculty and staff are our best ambassadors to share NOVA’s commitment to students!

The finals began with a nail-biting game one, where the Nighthawks carried their momentum forward to edge out an 8-7 overtime win, putting them on tournament point. In game two, they faced Drexel on the same map where they had earlier suffered a 1-7 defeat. Against all odds, the Nighthawks ignited, taking an early 6-4 lead and setting up a match point. Drexel pushed back to make it 6-5, but the Nighthawks clutched a thrilling 2v1 showdown to secure the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Series championship in style.

The NOVA Police Department extends its gratitude to all those who participated, helping to ensure that these medications no longer posed a threat to public safety. The collection event was not only about removing potentially dangerous substances from our communities but also about raising awareness of the risks of prescription drug abuse.
Thanks to the efforts of the NOVA community and surrounding areas, approximately 35 pounds of prescription drugs were collected and disposed of properly. This event underscores the importance of community involvement in promoting public health and safety, and NOVA Police remain committed to offering resources and support for ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and misuse.

“Leveraging AI from the Classroom to the Office” introduced faculty across disciplines to a variety of free tools we can start using with students in class today. Tools discussed ranged from creating avatars, designing lecture plans and making videos to creating supplemental teaching documents and study guides, and much more! There’s even an AI app that can support grant writing.
Dr. Michelle Baragona is the vice president of instruction at Northeast Mississippi Community College and a strong advocate for technology in education. Dr. Carlena Benjamin is the instructional technology specialist at Northeast Mississippi Community College with 20 years of experience teaching Biology. The workshop left participants excited and inspired to explore and play. If you missed it, we invite you to watch the workshop recording here.
In the Spring, CATE will facilitate a community of practice for faculty interested in trying out different AI tools in their teaching. Stay tuned to the DailyFlyer for more information on Spring professional development through CATE.

Delegate Herring (District 4), who represents parts of Fairfax County and City of Alexandria, was excited to learn about the campus by seeing our facilities, asking questions, and better understanding NOVA’s needs.
The tour began with a stop in the Nighthawk Nest Food Pantry, a vital resource that provides easy, on-campus access to free food and personal care products for students. The tour then proceeded to the Academic Success Center. The Academic Success Center provides students with a variety of support programs including appointment tutoring, writing help, study skills development, and workshops. NOVA students enrolled in for-credit courses can utilize ASC’s resources at no additional cost, helping them to achieve their academic goals.
The final stop on the tour was the Automotive Technology Center, a state of the art facility that provides an immersive educational experience and prepares students for success in the automotive industry. Delegate Herring fondly recalled working on the brakes of the family car growing up. NOVA faculty and program head for Automotive and Collision Repair Technology Laura Garcia provided an overview of the Automotive Technology program, highlighting the equipment and resources that students use for hands-on training. Graduates from the program go on to fill crucial workforce needs in the region as automotive technicians.
