RED cameras

The biggest buzz over the weekend was about learning raw cinema cameras (such as RED) and learning DaVinci Resolve for color correction.  PHT 274 (Digital Editing) will teach students basic and advanced editing techniques in Final Cut Pro X and Premiere Pro CS6, motion graphics in After Effects, and color correction in Resolve.  The course is by permission only, so you should have some familiarity with either FCP or Premiere already (just the basics) and be somewhat familiar with Photoshop too.

I will be teaching, among other things, working with cinema cameras, such as RED, in the PHT 298 cinematography course.  However, this is not a basic course (nor is it an advanced course).  The class is designed for those that have worked with video cameras in the past, preferably in a professional or academic setting and not just filming friends for online content.  You should already know how to get a good exposure on a camera, the basics of things such as luma and chroma, and lighting for video production (even if just three-point setups).  We will teach you the next level but, also, explore lots of different areas of production; so, please do not also think this is an exclusive training class for a RED camera.  You will certainly learn how to shoot raw and put it into practice on a RED camera, among other cameras, but know you will get a well-rounded instruction on being a cinematographer and not just a specialized how-to training class on one particular camera.

Please come see me on campus in room 328 or contact me via e-mail at cstallings@nvcc.edu if you have more questions about these two new classes being offered this fall.

Raffle Winners

We have not announced the AMC movie ticket raffle winners yet but we will do so by the end of the week, so please keep checking back.  There are ten winners, so the chances are good for those that signed up over the weekend.  Also, you still have some time for the second raffle – simply enroll for one of the “film” classes by June 14th of this year and you will be entered into a second raffle to appear on the big screen in our promotional video.

AMC Movie Magic

What a great event we had over the weekend.  Over 16,000 theater patrons passed by our display over the three days and we got to meet many new people with some level of interest in film.  We treasured all the conversations and look forward to many new working relationships with all the great people we greeted.  We hope to see you at the movies soon and keep an eye out for our promotional video to probably air at AMC in July.

AMC Theaters Promotional Event

We are excited to announce that the Woodbridge campus of NOVA will be tabling an event at AMC theaters in Woodbridge for the weekend release of Star Trek 2 (May 17th).  We will have film program professors available at a table in the lobby of the theater to answer any questions you might have about our classes.  We will also be raffling off movie tickets and displaying some RED equipment, so please stop by and speak to us.

Also, keep an eye out for the NOVA Woodbridge film program promotional video we will be producing in the coming months and it will play in the theater before every movie through the end of the summer and as classes start in the fall.  We are excited about this opportunity.

PHT 131 Video Coming Soon

The students of PHT 131 (Video II) worked together to film their semester-long short film, “There’s Something About Alex.”  Now that it’s in the can, they can concentrate on completing post-production before the end of the month.  There will be more information about its screening and film festival run in later postings.  We are proud of the work they have done so far.

Festival of the Arts

The Festival of the Arts is currently collecting submissions for the student writing portion of the contest.  There are categories for essay, short story, poetry, and script.  There is a $100 first place prize for each category and one second place prize of $50 for each.  All submissions are due in room 402 by 5pm on Friday, March 15th (you must also include an Entrant’s Card – also available in room 402).

Winners will be announced on Monday, April 1st (no joke).

For more details, including length of submissions and printed information, please contact the Communications and Humanities Division, room 402.

Good luck!

Please Welcome…

As we continue to expand our film program on the Woodbridge campus, we are welcoming two new additions to our “crew.”

Demetrius Oatis will be an adjunct professor, teaching video production and editing courses starting in spring of 2013.  He has years of experience in the film industry, most in broadcast, including his current role as a video director for Voice of America.

Jonathan Balsamo will also be joining us in the spring semester.  He will be a special tutor assigned in instruction in video production and editing.  He is currently a freelance videographer in the Northern Virginia area.

We are excited to welcome these two gentlemen on board and we are especially excited for the students, who will benefit from the additional attention and direction.

Special Thanks for a Wonderful Experience

I just wanted to send a special list of those individuals I wish to recognize and thank for the completion of this special video project we piloted in the spring 2012 semester of PHT 130 (Video I) here on the Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

First of all, I want to give a very special THANK YOU to all of the students in my class who worked very hard on this project (in alphabetical order):

Carl “Doc” Bentley, Kelly Coe, Joeseph Emerson, Eddie Gomez, Kat Hemphill, Sarah Hicks, Anthony Hyter, Meghan Oney, Lorraine Pino, Isidro Ramirez, Selestino Rodriguez, Danny Salzberg, Allan Setash, Darious Thomas.

Special thanks to Eddie for the rough edit of the music video.  Also a special thanks to those of my students who also acted: Selestino and Darious.  And to the students on set who worked so hard: Allan, Eddie, Doc, Kelly, Kat, Meghan, Lorraine, Isidro, and Danny.

Thank you to our other actors:

Shea Davies ( a professional actress from NYC made the trip to help the cause) – fish vendor

Kim Irwin (one of our own students) – flower vendor

America Twiggs (daughter of one of our campus tutors, Kellee Twiggs) – little girl

Jack Mourad (auditioned for the part) – little boy

And thank you to these individuals who were the extras (in order of appearance): Paul Martin (NOVA student – who knew how great of an actor he would be); Broc Pulley (NOVA student and former PHT 130 student – talented filmmaker in his own right); Dennis Sullivan (one of NOVA Woodbridge’s excellent counselors AND a former student in PHT 130); Mitch Gibson (NOVA student and a great looking fisherman); Megan Gazzelli (NOVA student and a member of the NOVA Woodbridge Filmmaking Club); Wendy Gazzelli (NOVA student and also a member of our Filmmaking Club); Kathryn Nordan Lynch (NOVA student and a Woodbridge tutor); and Bharti (NOVA Student and a new, undiscovered talent).

I also wish to thank Tim’s Rivershore resturant, including our contact, Amy Riggleman, for the use of the restaurant and its property for the actual film shoot.  The food is delicious, so if you have not made a trip there, do it quickly before the summer is done.

Thank you to John Ruffino and the board of the NVCC Educational Foundation for approving a small grant to assist in the payment of 522 productions for their dedicated partnership.

And, of course, thank you very much to 522 Productions for agreeing to volunteer their time, their staff, their equipment, and their knowledge to the completion of this project.  They agreed to work at cost (probably at even less) just to help the cause with the actual film shoot and the color correction of the final edit.  Each student enjoyed the experience!

We hope each of you viewing the vdieo also enjoys the hard work and passes it along to someone else so they can continue to enroll here at NOVA Woodbridge and build the demand for our film classes and increase our film course offerings.
