For Faculty

As the Languages, Arts, and Social Sciences liaison, I work closely with faculty to provide tutoring and other services to students in LASS classes. I am particularly interested in helping students to strengthen the core competencies they need to succeed in their classes: academic skills like close reading and note-taking, critical thinking skills, time management, and communication. I am happy to work individually with specific students when you refer them to ASC. I am also available to visit your classes in person either to let your students know about our services or to present a skills workshop module. For more information about all the services ASC can provide to faculty, check out our page HERE.

A list of our current workshops can be found HERE. Any of them can be customized for your needs. In addition, we can develop discipline-specific workshops to focus on the particular skill sets and strategies used in your field. Contact me at gmccrea@nvcc.edu or 703-575-4708 for more information.

If you have students in your class who you think would make great tutors, we are always accepting applications. Peer tutors receive training, job experience, and leadership opportunities. Applications are available HERE or in our center.

If you’d like to give your students information about our services, feel free to cut and paste this blurb in your syllabus:

The Academic Success Center (ASC) offers appointment tutoring in most subjects, walk-in tutoring for MTH classes and world languages, and a variety of workshops to guide NOVA students towards more efficient and effective academic study skills and strategies. Professional staff provide free and confidential coaching in areas such as time/project management, academic reading, exam preparation, test-taking strategies, and study strategies. The Center is located in AA-229. The Summer 2019 hours of operation are Monday – Thursday 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Students are encouraged to stop by to use the free services, study space, computer lab, and more. To schedule an appointment with a tutor or coach, please call 703-845-6363 or visit in person.
