Urban Agriculture Intern

The Urban Agriculture Intern will assist with the administration of Fairfax County’s Garden Plot Rental Program. Duties will include physical clearing of plots for new tenants (manual labor),
writing a weekly summary of activities in our Demonstration Garden for distribution to 650 gardeners, interacting with gardeners to implement our new organization plan, and entering plot inspection data into Excel spreadsheets. Special projects as assigned.
Compensation: Interns will be temporary, part-time employees of the Fairfax County Park Authority. Compensation is $11.43 hour for up to 300 hours. Start and end dates are negotiable.
Hours: 15 hours per week (must be on-site with few exceptions)
9am -2pm Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one other day
Start Date: April 1 but no later than May 15
End Date: July 30 with possible extension up to August 20
Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four year horticulture, botany, environmental education or
similar degree program. Preferred applicants will have good written communication skills as well as experience and/or commitment to educating adults in best gardening practices. Applicants
must be able to lift 25 lbs., walk on uneven terrain, work outdoors and have own transportation.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with data collection and reporting , OSHA training and/or site safety training,
Good handwriting skills, Microsoft Office skills including Word and Excel, Botanical knowledge helpful but not required.
