Job Description: Garden & Landscape Technician
Oatlands Historic House and Gardens is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Established in 1804, the property includes 20 historic structures on 400 acres of grounds, including a 4.5-acre English style garden, and 8 miles of multi-purpose trails. Our goal is to give visitors world-class experiences in education, history, research, conservation and in the enjoyment of the natural northern Virginia landscape through numerous events.
Revenue is secured through donations and memberships, trail, grounds and house tours, events and weddings, educational and interpretation programs, Airbnb and annual rentals and a modest endowment. Mount Vernon Gardens and Landscape Part-time Summer 2021 Position
George Washington’s Mount Vernon has openings for a paid summer position that may have the potential of fulfilling an internship requirement for undergraduates in horticulture or related fields. This position offers practical, hands-on training to students interested in a career working in public and/or historic gardens or landscapes, as well as critical insight into the challenges that these spaces face. Candidates are expected to be dependable and highly motivated, and will have the opportunity to work alongside the gardeners in all areas of the Mount Vernon landscape, including the historic gardens and grounds, and the museum and Fred W. Smith Memorial Library landscapes. Exposure to adverse weather conditions such as heat and humidity is to be expected, as well as strenuous physical activity, (but we also find time for a few fun activities!). This position is for a 32-hour week for 15 weeks, from 6:30am-3:00pm, including one weekend day. Duties are as follows, but not limited to:
· Planting, fertilizing, watering, and staking annuals, vegetables, and perennials
· Weeding and mulching
· Assisting gardeners with pruning grapes and ornamental vines, shrubs, and fruit trees
· Dead-heading and seed collecting of perennials and annuals
· Harvesting produce
· Operating irrigation systems
· Using hand tools and operating mowers, string trimmers, and blowers
