Assistance needed from a horticulture student with some applied experience and willingness to learn more about applying home garden care & design to a current established garden, and a prospective new garden development plan for a local northern Virginia residential property.
Duties (Job requires “hands-on” work, applying your academic knowledge):
1. Care and pruning of tropical hibiscus & poinsettia plants for their indoor winter hiatus, prior to their return outdoors next spring.
2. Developing a shade garden with an emphasis on colorful blossoms for mostly perennials & some annuals.
3. Design pathways through a small shade garden that is situated under two large ‘Shirofugen’ cherry trees. Possible addition of a small water feature, or garden focal point.
4. Assist with weed control, by applications of pre-emergent herbicide & minor physical pruning & clearance of weeds in Fall and Spring, including applications near March 1 & May 15.
5. Control/eradicate Japanese stiltgrass and some Duchesnea ) in areas of the lawn ( a small yard ).
6. Potential project of transplanting portions/selected plantings from one oriental garden into a new location yet to be designed & developed.
7. Some trimming of Rose of Sharon and Crepe Myrtle & Holly bushes.
Hours: flexible, as applicant is available
Pay commensurate with experience.
