Horticulture Internship – Clay Hill Farm

Clay Hill Farm is a 100-acre estate located in the heart of Virginia’s hunt country in Boyce, VA. Features include an Italianate perennial garden, including formal boxwood parterre, extensive
organic vegetable and cut flower gardens, dahlia collection, and potted plant collections. Property has been featured in Architectural Digest, Wine & Country Life, and The Garden
Conservancy, and is often toured by Garden Clubs and various groups.

A full-time experienced Horticulturist with a Masters from the New York Botanical Garden will be supervising the position along with the owner.

QUALIFICATIONS:
● The ideal candidate would be detail-oriented, dependable and with a basic knowledge of
garden maintenance, plant and pest ID
● Must be attending a horticulture-related program or have at least one season of
experience working in a professional garden setting
● Valid driver’s license
● Ability to work in all weather conditions
● Basic knowledge or ability to learn use and maintenance of hand tools and basic garden
power equipment

RESPONSIBILITIES
● Assist Property Owner and on-site, Horticulturist on full range of garden and property
maintenance, including but not limited to:
○ Upkeep of perennial/annual gardens around the main residence
○ Maintaining extensive boxwood collection, including formal boxwood parterre
○ Planting and maintenance of dahlia garden, containing over 75 cultivars
○ Planting, upkeep and harvest of extensive organic vegetable and cutting gardens
○ Care of potted collections including citrus, orchids, palms, cycads and camellias
○ Monitoring and watering of trees, shrubs, and annuals; fertilization of trees,
shrubs and garden beds
○ Edging, mulching and weeding of beds
○ Weekly pest and plant health monitoring of property, applying integrated pest
management strategies as needed
○ Garden design and plant choices for both permanent and seasonal plantings

SALARY
● This can be a full or part time position. Hours to be discussed and can vary depending
on class schedule. Occasional weekend hours and flexibility may be required. At least
some availability is desired between April and September.
● $17-$18/hr dependent on experience
