Job Title: Horticulturist/Gardener

The owner of the 270-acre historic White House Farm in Luray, Virginia, is seeking an individual with gardening and horticultural experience to maintain and improve 5 acres of landscaped grounds. The applicant’s work will be garden focused with the goal of maintaining the current site plantings and adding additional plantings and gardens. Additional opportunities may exist with respect to native plantings and care, for a qualified applicant.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Professional horticultural work experience, along with formal horticultural education and/or certifications such as that from the Master Gardener Program.
• An excellent understanding of garden plant care and identification. Particular knowledge of perennial garden design, planting and care are important strengths.
• The knowledge and ability to perform other various grounds maintenance tasks including weeding, pruning, and pest management are required, including knowledge in the latest in IPM and various natural approaches to garden maintenance and enhancement.
• NOTE: this is a horticulturalist/gardening position and will not require grass cutting or other heavy-duty grounds maintenance chores.

Work tasks will include:

• Trim and maintain garden beds and lawns.
• Assess and maintain the health of all plants.
• Irrigation management for perennials, annuals and shrubs.
• Design and installation of new planting areas and correct landscape problems as needed.
• Keep accurate records of garden inventory and work performed, as well as budgeting for maintenance and new plantings.

This position may allow for a part-time or full-time employment arrangement. Salary is negotiable based on experience and full- or part-time status.
