Earth Sangha is looking for a nursery associate! In this position, you would help with conservation and propagation in their Wild Plant Nursery, which is the region’s largest local ecotype plant propagation effort! The nursery associates day to day responsibilities include the care and propagation of native plants, the overall organization of the Wild Plant Nursery, and working with plant passionate volunteers!

They’re looking to hire someone for this position to start this summer. It is a permanent part-time position that includes health insurance, retirement, and accrued paid time off with a salary of $18/hour.

Job Title: Nursery Associate

Hours: 8am to 1pm M-F, some flexible hours, occasional prearranged weekend work

Compensation: $18/hr, employer-provided health insurance, Simple IRA, accrued paid time off, and paid vacation.

Location: Wild Plant Nursery, Springfield VA. Occasional duties in the office (Annandale VA). Potential for occasional field work throughout the Northern Virginia/DC region.

Description:
The Earth Sangha is looking for someone interested in native plant conservation and propagation to join us as a Nursery Associate working at our Wild Plant Nursery, the region’s largest exclusively local-ecotype plant propagation effort. The Nursery Associate will handle day-to-day propagation and care of native plants and the organization of the Wild Plant Nursery while working with volunteers.

The ideal candidate is someone outgoing and collegial who enjoys working outdoors and wants to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.

No specific horticultural or ecological background is required, but the ideal candidate would demonstrate an interest in and some understanding of concepts of plant propagation, ecology, and conservation.

Duties: 

  • Lead and prepare for regular volunteer events at the Wild Plant Nursery
  • Basic native plant propagation (re-potting, division, thinning)
  • Care for plants through regular watering, as-needed fertilization, weeding, top-dressing
  • Identify and label plants; print labels at the office
  • Maintain organization of the nursery including inventory, consolidation,
  • Provide refreshments for volunteers (purchased by Earth Sangha)
  • Assist with greenhouse propagation and seed cleaning in the winter

Requirements: 

  • Reliable transportation
  • Able to work outdoors for entire shifts
  • Interest in native plants and their conservation and restoration
  • Capable of physical demands including working on your feet, using wheelbarrows, picking up objects from ground level, occasionally moving heavy objects with others
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Some college education
