The following is a new paid internship only available to a current NOVA student!

Earth Sangha NVCC Student 2025 Native Plant Conservation Internship. Positions available: 1

Assist the Earth Sangha in the day-to-day operations of the Wild Plant Nursery. Our nursery is the region’s only exclusively local ecotype native plant nursery. Engage in restoration activities on field sites including invasive plant removal and native plantings. Learn about Northern Virginia’s native flora, horticultural skills, and become part of a grassroots effort to conserve and restore our native plants and their habitats.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist in the supervision of nursery volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Receive training on basic day-to-day nursery operations in order to independently complete tasks including: identification of native plants, watering, sowing seed, making divisions, repotting, identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies, basic maintenance tasks, and cleaning/organization tasks.

  • Assist with other operations at the Wild Plant Nursery, as necessary.

  • Opportunities for field work at other sites throughout the region including plant identification, seed collection, and invasive plant removals.

  • Meet regularly with your supervisor and staff mentor(s) to discuss your career goals and progress.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College.

  • Reliable transportation to and from Wild Plant Nursery (Grove Point Park, Springfield) and other field sites.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Interest in native plants and their conservation.

  • Be able to work outdoors for extended periods of time.

  • Be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects, bending, kneeling or stooping, or other manual labor tasks.

  • Relevant education or job experience is a plus, but not necessary.​

Compensation and other information:

  • Our NVCC student internships are seasonal positions, limited to a 10 week term with a schedule of about 15 hours a week. Typical hours are 8am to 1pm, Sunday through Thursday.

  • Spring and Fall positions are available.

  • NVCC Student Internship positions pay $16 an hour. Student Internship positions do not qualify for benefits.

The Operations Manager is an integral part of the Administration Department and performs a variety of tasks across the organization in support of our mission to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of the National Capital Region. These responsibilities include: managing and maintaining the office premises, equipment, systems and procedures, and; providing support to the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer, the Business Manager and the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate is an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly organized individual. The candidate should be friendly, outgoing, diplomatic, and flexible, with great communication and technology skills.

Gardener Position at Oatlands

Job Summary:

The Gardener will maintain the integrity and overall appearance of gardens and grounds at Oatlands, in accordance with preservation standards appropriate for a National Historic Landmark and National Trust Historic Site. This is a position for a person who desires a career in caring for historic gardens and landscapes and has some experience and/or training. The Gardener will work with the Landscape Supervisor to develop a seasonal maintenance plan for the Historic Gardens and Historic Tree Collection. They will identify non-routine landscape maintenance or repairs and assist in determining appropriate procedures with regard to historic preservation guidelines and standards. The Gardener will ensure that the Historic Gardens, Tree Collection and larger Grounds are maintained and presented to the highest professional landscape and horticultural standards, balancing the needs of historic preservation, education, interpretation and visitor safety.

This is a benefits eligible, part-time position with a pay rate of $21 an hour. Our expectation is that the gardener will work 20-25 hours per week.

Spring and Summer Gardening Positions at Dumbarton Oaks!

Some great opportunities at an amazing, world-class garden!
The Spring position is for 1 gardener, and the Summer position is for up to 3 gardeners. These positions can’t be combined, so unfortunately, a Spring gardener can’t stay to work as a Summer gardener, due to Harvard restrictions. These temporary positions can qualify as internships to meet student requirements.
These would count for the HRT 297 credit requirements at the NOVA Horticulture Program.

Shenandoah District Community College Scholarship

The Shenandoah District Community College Scholarship will offer financial aid in the amount of $1,000 to a full-time rising second year student of an accredited Community College in Shenandoah District, Virginia. Career goals must demonstrate objectives that are garden related.

You must be a resident of Virginia, and preference is given to those residing in the Shenandoah district (but this is not a requirement).

Carlyle House Gardener

Carlyle House is seeking a part time gardener to care for a diverse colonial revival garden in Old Town Alexandria. Knowledge of 18th and early 19th century garden history a plus but not a requirement. Knowledge of caring for perennials, annuals, wood shrubs, pest management and pruning are key. The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions is required. The ability to manage, schedule and train volunteers is required. Budget management is required. Lawn care, tree/shrub pest management, irrigation system maintenance and leaf removal are handled by contractors and are not a requirement of this position, although knowledge of these subjects is helpful. Snow removal is not a part of this position.
