Carlyle House Gardener Position 2025
About the Carlyle House Garden: Construction on Carlyle House was completed in 1753. John Carlyle was a wealthy merchant and a founder of the city of Alexandria. This Georgian architecture style home sits on what was an acre of land in 1753. Today the home retains its grand presence on North Fairfax Street and has been open as a museum since 1976. The garden as you see it today did not exist in John Carlyle’s time. It is a colonial revival style conjecture of what a garden may have looked like. Today it is a popular destination for family portraits, weddings, local residents and visitors from all over the world. The garden plantings are kept to the time period in which the Carlyle Family owned the home (1750s-1820s). Wherever possible organic practices are used to keep the garden in top shape. The garden is 50 years old and is showing the signs of a changing environment. Working with the Site Manager and other staff this position would be responsible for helping to develop a plan to revitalize areas of the garden.
