Urban Forester I (Fairfax County)

About/General Duties:

Under the supervision of a Forest Conservation Urban Forester III within the Urban Forest Management Division, DPWES, inspects construction sites for compliance with requirements on approved site plans relating to landscaping, screening, tree preservation and vegetation related proffers and development conditions; assists in final bond and escrow release inspections and under direction prepares needed deficiency lists, correspondence and project documentation; participates in on-site conferences and preconstruction meetings held on construction sites to resolve issues and ensure contractor compliance with county code requirements. Answers technical questions from the public, engineers, architects, landscapers, the development community, and other Fairfax County agencies. Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Tree Conservation Ordinance, (Chapter 122 of the Code) the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance and the Public Facilities Manual.
  • Ability and experience (minimum of 6 months) in performing urban forestry field work including pre-construction meetings, final inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents.
  • Working knowledge of horticulture including trees, shrubs and vines as applied to the urban environment.
  • Certified Arborist Certification (International Society of Arboriculture) within 12 months of hire.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field.

White House Farm Foundation Park Manager

About:

The White House Farm Foundation is seeking an individual to be the full-time onsite manager of its 386-acre nature preserve, known as Leopold’s Preserve, and located in Haymarket, Virginia. An applicant should have a deep interest in the natural world and particular knowledge of the flora and fauna of Northern Virginia. The position will allow for not only hands-on park maintenance activities, but also working alongside the Foundation’s Executive Director on educational programs, partner projects, and restoration efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain pedestrian trails; operate vehicles and small engine equipment such as UTV, commercial mower, chain saw, backpack blower and line trimmer.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of equipment to include replacing worn parts and making minor mechanical adjustments. Duties may include sharpening or replacing worn blades on mowers, replacing string on line trimmers, and sharpening or replacing worn chain saw chains.
  • Perform facility maintenance such as repairing and staining fences, boardwalks, and bridges.
  • Assist with public relations by handling visitor inquiries and providing information and assistance.
  • Assist with habitat restoration of meadows, forests, and wetlands. Duties may include using manual or chemical techniques to control invasive plants, planting trees, seeding meadows, and assisting with prescribed burns.
  • Work with various contractors to obtain proposals for work on site, and manage such contractors accordingly.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of basic horticulture, plant identification, and forest health; knowledge of native plants and invasive species. Love of the outdoors and the ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions. 4-year degree from an accredited university in Forestry, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management or related major; 1 year work experience in related area.

2-year degree from an accredited university or community college in Forestry, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management or related major; 2 years work experience in related area.

About:

As a Maintenance Worker on the Landscaping & Forestry crew, you will assist in maintaining more than 91 properties, placing over 800 yards of mulch, planting 150 trees, and trimming more than 2,500 trees each year. You will be joining a hard-working and collaborative team committed to creating, building, and maintaining streetscapes, landscaped medians, and other public facility landscapes for the use and enjoyment of our citizens and visitors to our community. Salary:

Hours:

Full time, 40 hrs./week (7am-3pm). Monday through Friday. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.

1. Care and pruning of tropical hibiscus & poinsettia plants for their indoor winter hiatus, prior to their return outdoors next spring.
