Scholarship- Virginia Society of Landscape Designers

Landscape Design specialization students, this one’s for you! The Virginia Society of Landscape Designers is awarding a $1000 scholarship to a Virginia College student in an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Horticulture with a Specialization in Landscape Design.

Sponsor: The Virginia Society of Landscape Designers is a nonprofit association that provides continuing education opportunities to its members as well as networking opportunities. The scholarship program is offered to students in the Commonwealth of Virginia who intend to pursue a career as a landscape designer.

Eligibility: A Commonwealth of Virginia resident college student accepted to a college program that offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Horticulture with a Specialization in Landscape Design. A minimum of 3.0 cumulative grade point average is also required.

Scholarship Awarded: $1000 and a year membership to VSLD after
graduating.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Transfer Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation offers a competitive scholarship for community college students with exceptional promise and demonstrated financial need to pursue a baccalaureate degree. Students in any discipline may apply. The award provides funding for tuition, room and board, required fees and books for the remainder (up to three years) of the scholar’s undergraduate degree. Scholarship amounts will vary depending upon the costs of the institution the scholar attends as well as any other grants or scholarships the individual may receive. Awards can be as much as $55,000 per year.

The JKCF scholarship application website opens October 6, and applications will be accepted through January 12, 2023.

Applications must be submitted only through The Common App.

Eligible scholarship applicants must meet all the criteria below:

  • Have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Demonstrate significant financial need.
  • Be at least a sophomore (30 semester credits earned by December 31, 2022).
  • No previous enrollment or attendance at a four-year institution.
  • Plan to transfer and enroll full-time in an accredited four-year university for fall 2023.

For assistance, students are encouraged to contact their campus representative to discuss the eligibility criteria, the application process and deadlines, and to explore strategies for developing a competitive application.

The Community Foundation of Northern Virginia has announced that the Plein Environmental Scholarship Fund’s application deadline has been extended!! You could be awarded up to $15,000 for school! $2,500 for a first and second year at NVCC and $5,000 for a third and fourth year at a 4-year Virginia public university

Casey Tress + Garden Club of America (Urban Forestry Fellowship)

About:

  • The Garden Club of America: Founded in 1913, The Garden Club of America is a nonprofit organization comprised of 200 member clubs and approximately 18,000 club members throughout the United States. To promote greater understanding of the interdependence of horticulture, environmental protection, and community involvement, GCA offers 29 different merit-based scholarships and annually awards over $300,000.
  • Casey Trees: Casey Trees is a non-profit organization established in 2001 to restore, enhance and protect the tree canopy of Washington, DC. The organization works with others to plant and care for trees and promotes the use of green infrastructure of environmentally friendly and sustainable development.

Eligibility:

Open to graduate or advanced undergraduate students that are studying urban forestry, environmental studies, horticulture, forestry, or related courses of study with a special interest in the urban forest. Students must be enrolled during the academic year following the award decision. Eligibility is open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in a U.S. – based institution.

Provisions:

Funds one or more students annually at $7,500 for study and research that will advance the knowledge of urban forestry and increase the number of scientists in the field.

Application Process:

  1. Applicants should complete the electronic application form. Be prepared to upload a vita at the time of your electronic application form submission. Preview the application questions here. At minimum, include:
    • Relevant Education, work, and volunteer experience
    • Publications and presentations
    • Career goals
  2. A letter of endorsement directly emailed from applicant’s major professor/advisor and signed by the student’s faculty advisor and submitted to: gcaurbanforestry@caseytrees.org by January 31 with the name of the student in the subject line. The letter should:
    • Identify the student
    • Indicate the status of the student in the program
    • Evaluate the students ability as an independent researcher.

Application Deadline:

January 31st – Application is not considered complete until the letter of endorsement is received. Final award decisions are made in late March. Fellowship recipients will receive official notification from the Garden Club of America. PGMS DC Branch Scholarship Opportunity

Professional Grounds Management Society Scholarship

Requirements:

1. Applicant must be a resident of MD, VA, or DC
2. Applicant must be a current student of horticulture or a related field.
3. Applicant must be at least in their first year of college or may be recently graduated from high
school (within the calendar year).
4. Applicant must be sponsored by a PGMS member.

What the scholarship selection committee looks for:

  • An active student with solid grades,
  • Past or current employment in the green industry
  • Involvement in the industry with apprentice or professional organizations, such as FFA, 4H,state or county programs,
  • Civic projects and outreach programs.
  • The committee also looks for any personal development classes and any involvement in sports or
    clubs.

Applying for the scholarship:

All applicants must submit the following to PGMS DC Branch, either by mail or email:
• The completed scholarship application.
• Cover letter. Please include introduction, educational and professional goals, and intent for use
of scholarship funds.
• Current resume. Please include past employment history, awards, and certificates earned.
• College or school transcripts.
• Two (2) letters of recommendation. These should be from an instructor, employer, etc.
• A letter from the PGMS member who is sponsoring the applicant.

The Garden Club of America Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards

Since 1928 when the Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture was established, The Garden Club of America has funded more than 1,400 recipients. The GCA offers 28 merit-based scholarships, fellowships and awards in 12 areas.
