Mount Vernon Gardens and Landscapes Part-time Position Summer 2024

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Horticulture Department has openings for paid summer positions that may have the potential of fulfilling an internship requirement for undergraduates in horticulture, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, agriculture, botany, or a related field. These positions offer the chance to gain practical, hands-on horticultural experience at a renowned historic site. Students are expected to be dependable and highly motivated, and will have the opportunity to work alongside the gardeners in all areas of the Mount Vernon Estate, including the historic gardens and grounds, the museum, Fred W. Smith Memorial Library landscapes, as well as in the surrounding woods, managing invasive plants. Exposure to adverse weather conditions such as heat and humidity is to be expected, as well as periods of strenuous physical activity. Schedule is a 40-hour week, 6:30am-3:00pm, including one weekend day. Applicants are expected to behave and communicate in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within the Horticulture department and throughout the Estate, with co-workers, management, and volunteers.

Expected duties include, but are not limited to, assisting gardeners with:

  • Planting, seed sowing, watering, and staking annuals, vegetables, and perennials.
  • Weeding and mulching.
  • Pruning grapes and ornamental vines, shrubs, and fruit trees.
  • Dead-heading and seed collecting of perennials and annuals.
  • Harvesting produce.
  • Invasives control in woods.

Ability to use hand tools and operate mowers, string trimmers, and blowers are a plus.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens has over 13 acres of landscaped gardens and welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year who enjoy our art collection and our gardens. Hillwood is seeking someone passionate about creating beautiful outdoor spaces to be a part of the horticulture team. Our Horticulture team ensures our gardens meet the high standards of our founder Marjorie Merriweather Post and are a welcome place for visitors from all over the world.

The Gardener I will work as a part of a team of horticulture professionals to perform daily duties including, weeding, mulching, planting, mowing and trimming lawns, blowing roads and walkways, leaf and snow removal, fertilizing and watering. In conversation with staff, volunteers and visitors you will use your customer service skills.

Part Time Gardeners- Green Spring Garden

The fabulous Green Spring Garden that you know and love from Professor Dickson’s Plant ID courses, the same Green Spring Garden that is meticulously managed by a NOVA Horticulture Alumni, is looking to hire a part-time gardener! You’re in luck though! Not only are they hiring one part-time gardener, but they actually have 2 open part-time gardener positions! One is for 900 hours per year, which maths out to about 18 hours per week, and one for 1,560 hours per year, which maths out to about 30 hours a week. The pay and the positions are great especially if you’re still working your way through the program so do not hesitate to apply!

Flex Gardener- Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation

Did you fall in love with the Bishop’s Garden at the Washington National Cathedral while on the Plant Composition Field Trip? Even if you’re not familiar with the beauty of the gardens at Washington national cathedral, you’ll still be interested in an opportunity that just opened up for a Flex Gardener. A Flex Gardener with the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation would report to the Horticulture and Grounds Director and expect to complete tasks including but not limited to maintaining ornamental plantings, recognizing and reporting pests and diseases, and following proper techniques for plant installation. The ‘flex’ in ‘flex gardener’ indicates that you float between areas of responsibility, determining the most pressing garden needs and concentrating on assisting the zone gardener to meet identified needs. This is a full-time position, with a Monday through Friday schedule, and is a year-round position to accommodate events and visitors.
