Job Description

Moon Valley Farm is seeking an experienced grower to work with our Production Manager to facilitate production in two greenhouses and eight high tunnels. This person should be versed in and passionate about organic agriculture and resolved to innovate and adapt as climate change and market interests fluctuate. We farm year-round and are always looking to improve our farming methods, yields, plant health and worker conditions. Additionally, as the farm continues to grow, we plan to expand and innovate with our greenhouse/high tunnel operations. The greenhouse hand should be willing and able to be decisive yet thoughtful in keeping all of these factors in mind. Hours will naturally need to be heavier in the summer than the winter, but the work is year-round and relatively consistent. Will work closely with farm owner Emma and the other managers.

ROLES + RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate seeding operations

    • Organize and keep track of seed inventory

    • Maintain seeding records according to organic certification requirements

    • Ensure seeding and seedlings are on schedule according to production calendar

    • Lead a team that will assist in large scale seeding/transplanting projects

  • Manage greenhouse/high tunnel crop production and infrastructure

    • Create and execute on irrigation schedule for greenhouses and high-tunnels,  including the use of timers and instruments for measuring moisture

    • Maintain healthy transplants/crops through regulation of temperature, scouting/spraying for pests, fertilization, etc.

    • Maintain greenhouse infrastructure (heat, plastic, tables, lights, etc) and communicate any/all issues or maintenance needs

    • Lead a team that will assist in large scale greenhouse/high tunnel projects

  • Facilitate Annual Plant Sale

    • Create and execute on a schedule for starting seedlings for our Annual Plant Sale in May

    • Organize greenhouses to promote sales and facilitate customer access

    • Track sales and update inventory as needed to match greenhouse production to customer needs

Two Horticulture Positions at Green Spring Gardens

The Office of Community Horticulture at Green Spring Gardens is currently hiring for two positions: 1) an Assistant to the Garden Plot Coordinator and 2) an Urban Ag Intern for the winter/spring months. The details are posted in the files below. The Assistant position has some flexibility (no remote work) and is 15 – 20 hours per week. The Internship is the same except that it is no more than 15 hours per week.

Fall Foliage Hike- Horticulture Club

I know everyone’s been busy getting into the swing of things for the fall semester, but don’t get so busy that you miss the beauty all around you! Come join us this Thursday, September 21st at 10am in the parking lot of Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park!

We will be meeting on Edwards Ferry Rd by the Grainery/Stable Ruins and then hiking the White Trail.

The white trail is a 1.2-mile loop trail with an amazing view of the Potomac River and is rated as easy to moderate on AllTrails.

There has been some rain recently that may have washed out parts of the trail, if that is the case we will be taking the blue trail to the overlook as an out-and-back. Any changes to the intended route will be determined day of based on recommendations from NOVA Parks and their Rangers.

Horticulturist Kyra will be there leading the hike with their emergency backpack, but please remember to bring appropriate shoes, your own water, bug spray, and sunscreen.

We cant wait to frolic in the fall foliage together!

Horticulture Club’s Spring Plant Sale is Back! April 11 and 13

NOVA’s Horticulture Club and Program is excited to announce the return of its annual plant sale in the Loudoun Campus greenhouse! This year, we’re selling new varieties of annuals, bedding plants, and indoor plants that we’ve never before carried! This includes more options for shade and greater color diversity. There are 13 different types of plants to choose from including Geraniums, Angelonia, Torenia, and New Guinea Impatiens. Each 5.5” student-grown plant will be $10 and we can only accept payment by cash or check. The greenhouse will be open on Tuesday and ThursdayApril 11 and 13 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. If you’re unable to come out to the Loudoun campus greenhouse, the Horticulture Club will also be participating in this year’s Leesburg Flower and Garden festival! You can find their booth at the intersection of Kings St and Market St in downtown Leesburg, as well as week full of fun and flowers!

First Club Meeting of the Spring Semester

Hello Horticulture Enthusiasts!

         We sure did miss you over the winter break! We hope that everybody had a safe and happy holiday season and that you’re back and ready to get your hands dirty!
Our first Horticulture Club meeting of the Spring 2023 semester is going to be on
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2ND FROM 4 TO 6 PM IN LS 102!!!!!
    In this meeting, we will be discussing the upcoming events for the semester including the Career Fair in March, the Plant Sale and Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival in April, the end of the semester field trip in May, possible spring break plans, guest lecturers, and other meetings and events!
There will be a small selection of snacks and drinks available and we hope to see you there!
