On October 28, NOVA’s Achieving the Dream (ATD) initiative sponsored a presentation by Dr. Kathleen Gabriel, author of “Teaching Unprepared Students: Strategies for Promoting Success and Retention in Higher Education.” The forum, hosted by Annandale’s ATD team, attracted 80 faculty and staff from across the College.

Gabriel’s message was that as the numbers of unprepared students increase at four-year and two-year colleges, it is the responsibility of faculty and staff to develop supportive classroom practices and policies to increase the likelihood of success for these students. She stated that unprepared students are most successful when teachers maintain high standards, provide clear explanations of class requirements, require class attendance, and encourage student interaction with peers and faculty. Her highly interactive presentation modeled easily adaptable techniques for engaging students in any classroom.
