Upcoming CETL Events

CETL LogoThe Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) would like to remind you of the following events:

On Monday, October 22, get your seat for CETL’s Monday Movie! CETL presents a different movie on the 4th Monday of each month. Please join in for “Mona Lisa Smiles.” The showing is at 3:00 p.m. in the CETL Center (AN, CG 218).

This event is facilitated by Alicia M. De la Torre Falzon, who asks, “After almost 60 years, has the College experience changed that much?”

“In 1953, Katherine Ann Watson (Julia Roberts), a 30-year-old graduate student in the department of Art History at UCLA, takes a position teaching “History of Art” at Wellesley College, a conservative women’s private liberal arts college in Massachusetts because she wants to make a difference and influence the next generation of women. At her first class, Katherine discovers that the girls have already memorized the entire syllabus from the textbook so she instead uses the classes to introduce them to Modern Art and encourages spirited classroom discussions about topics such as what makes good art and what the Mona Lisa’s smile means. This brings her into conflict with the conservative College President (Marian Seldes) who warns Katherine to stick to the syllabus if she wants to keep her job. Katherine comes to know many of the students in her class well and seeks to inspire them.”

CETLOn Thursday, October 25, do not miss the next seminar in the Faculty Focus Seminar Series:  Course Design for New and Seasoned Faculty. This one is titled, “Constructing Valid Multiple Choice Exams.”  It is in the CETL Center (AN Campus, CG 218) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be facilitated by PTA Program faculty Patty Ottavio. Come and find out if your tests are valid. Are your students just “good test takers” or did they really learn the course content? A valid test should reflect the students’ learning as described in the course objectives. This seminar will help you evaluate your test questions for validity and teach you how to write or change questions to make your tests more valid.  Reserve your seat, if you have not already done so at: http://tinyurl.com/CETL-series-2012. You can register for this seminar or any of the remaining seminars!
