In December, the Alpha Delta Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society partnered with the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center’s Pediatric Unit to provide toys and activities for children in the ward.
PTK members spent time at the end of Fall Semester raising funds and getting donations from the community to make the project a success. In spite of studying and final exams, they were able to make a dramatic impact. The Chapter provided more than $1,000 worth of games, toys and supplies for the entertainment of patients. On Christmas Eve, several members took time away from their families to deliver and assemble the donations so that children forced to spend the holiday in the hospital would be able to enjoy their time.
The Chapter and the Pediatric Unit are hoping to continue this relationship in the future. The toy drive was the fall semester project for PTK and is part of the chapter’s overall mission to “provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service.”
Special thanks goes out to PTK Chapter Advisor Theana Kastens and student Wendy Gazzelli, chapter president, for organizing this community effort.
