Career Workshop Provides Helpful Tools to NSMH Members

Career Workshop Provides Helpful Tools to NSMH Members On October 22, Hospitality Management Program Assistant Professor, DeQuan Smith (AN), and Career Counselor, Stephanie Allen (AN), hosted a professional development workshop for the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH). The presentation included resume tips and professional etiquette for securing employment in the hospitality profession.

“The workshop was a success. I am glad that NOVA’s faculty showed a vested interest in us. I have no idea what I would do without them,” Christina Minto said.

NSMH’s mission is to educate in order to aid in the recruitment, retention, support and advancement of minority students in the hospitality industry.

The Career and Transfer Resource Center provides NOVA students with access to self-help career resources, as well a computer lab where they can explore occupational information, plan for careers through self-directed programs and conduct job searches. In addition, the center has two career counselors who provide career counseling and other career service support for students on the Annandale Campus.

Babette Wise said, “We are so grateful for Ms. Stephanie Allen. She was so enthusiastic and made resume writing so simple for us.”

The Career and Transfer Resource Center staff looks forward to continuing to work with the Hospitality Management Program. A career fair this spring will focus on this initiative.
