NOVA Names Steve Mrowka to Athletic Director Post

NOVA Names Steve Mrowka to Athletic Director Post Steve Mrowka has been named the College’s inaugural coordinator of student athletics and recreation. Mrowka takes over the helm of NOVA athletics from Brian Anweiler, who serves as the college-wide student life coordinator. Anweiler led NOVA’s transition from club sports to intercollegiate athletics in 2011, and the school is now in its second season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Mrowka brings a wealth of experience as a head coach, athletic administrator and student-athlete. Most recently, he served as the head baseball coach at George Washington University (GW), an NCAA Division I program in Washington, D.C., for eight seasons (2005-2012).

Prior to his tenure with the Colonials, Mrowka served as the head baseball coach at Georgia College  for 11 seasons (1994-2004), and guided the Bobcats to the NCAA Division II tournament five times. He also earned multiple Coach of the Year accolades and his teams were consistently ranked nationally. In addition to his role as head coach, Mrowka served as an athletic administrator at Georgia College.

During his 19 years as a head coach, Mrowka’s collegiate coaching record is a combined 609-476-3. He picked up his 600th career victory on April 3, 2012. He also coached GW to a victory in the first game ever played at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Mrowka attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he was a varsity letterman in football, ice hockey and baseball. He transferred a year later to Polk State College in Winter Haven, Fl., where he earned an associate’s degree and was an all-state shortstop. Following Polk State, Mrowka enrolled at the University of North Carolina where he was a two-year starter on the Tar Heel’s team as an infielder, and earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

“Steve’s credentials for this position are ideal,” said Anweiler. “He has competed or coached at almost every level of intercollegiate athletics and that experience will pay dividends for NOVA student-athletes and coaches. As a former two-year college standout and successful transfer to a prestigious NCAA Division I program, he can serve as a model for our current students.”

After playing in the renowned Cape Cod and Alaska Baseball Leagues, he was a ninth-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox in 1985. Mrowka was in spring training with the Houston Astros when an elbow injury ended his playing career. Mrowka later spent two years at the University of Georgia where he earned a M.Ed. in sport management.

He and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of daughters Maggie, Caleigh and Lauren.

  1. Welcome to NOVA. Maybe NOVA will have a Baseball Team soon. There is a lot of talent in the Northern Virginia area.

    1. I also would support a baseball team at NOVA. Community Colleges in Maryland have baseball why not us? It provides a chance for those overlooked/late bloomers to play
division 1 college ball or pro.
