On March 28, the Virginia Community College System Northern Regional Center for Teaching Excellence hosted a drive-in workshop for faculty, “Responding to Distressed Students in the Classroom.” The workshop was held at NOVA’s Annandale Campus and was co-facilitated by Student Mental Health and Behavior and Case Manager, MaryAnn Raybuck, and Associate Professor of Communication, Nan Peck.

Faculty shared ideas about students who are experiencing distress or are disruptive in classes. Specific suggestions were offered for meeting students where they are and for maintaining a safe environment for learning. Facilitators offered a role-play demonstration and later participants repeated the exercise.

While NOVA does not offer mental health care, NOVACares teams and the Office for Student Mental Health and Behavior actively evaluate and respond to concerning behaviors and offer resources that are useful to staff and faculty.
