NOVA captured the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 20 Division I Women’s Cross Country Championship at Anne Arundel Community College on October 25.

NOVA edged Hagerstown Community College by one point to claim the College’s first NJCAA Region 20 Championship.

“Winning regionals was the goal from the beginning of the season,” said Head Coach Nicole Mancini, Manassas Physical Education faculty. “Hagerstown is an outstanding program with a long tradition so this moment is very special.”

Heather Mwitanti finished second overall with a time of 21:18 and Jeanna Mazaris crossed the finish line in fifth place with a time of 22:23 in the 5K race. Both Mwitanti and Mazaris earned All-Region honors. Overall, 43 runners competed in the 2014 NJCAA Region 20 meet.

“Coming into the season I was really nervous about the transition from the high school level to the collegiate level, but Coach Nicole, Coach Beth [Bisbee] and the team made the transition easier than I thought it would be,” said Mwitanti, a freshman from Roanoke. “Overall I feel like this season was a huge learning experience for us. Fortunately, we all had great success and achieved our ultimate goal, which made some of the tougher times worthwhile. I couldn’t have asked for a better season.”

2014 was the second season NOVA fielded a Women’s Cross Country team.
