Dr. Mark Whitmire was selected to direct the Chesterfield County Public Schools’ All-County High School Girls Honors Choir. He directed seven hours of master classes and rehearsals on October 21. The singers were selected from 12 high schools, several of which have music programs that are among the most highly regarded in the state. The culmination of the event was an evening concert. Included in the program were spirituals by the late Moses Hogan, choruses from Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio “Elijah” and three new works by the American composer Mark Patterson.
“I enjoyed this fabulous opportunity to talk to 12 high school music teachers and more than 100 students about music at NOVA. Many were interested in a two-year college, but did not know there is a two-year college that offers a full-fledged music program,” Whitmire said.
Whitmire is a professor of music at the Alexandria Campus where he directs the NOVA Community Chorus. At a concert last month, he celebrated his 30th year as choral director.
