The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced its Academic Student-Athlete Awards June 24 with 1,936 from across the nation earning the accolade. Five NOVA student-athletes garnered the high honors for their work in the classroom.
Dennis Almaraz from men’s soccer and Carolyn Oare of women’s basketball earned the Superior Academic Achievement for a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99.
Volleyball standout Somya Leskanich, cross country student-athlete Alexandra Willey and women’s basketball graduate Natalie Wright received the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award. To earn that award, Leskanich, Willey and Wright had to have a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79.
“This is a prestigious honor for our student-athletes,” Athletics Director Steve Mrowka said. “We are proud of our five students and hope to add more names next year.”
NOVA was the only two-year college in Virginia to have student-athletes appear on the Academic Student-Athlete Awards list.
The NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards program has annually recognized the academic success of the association’s student-athletes since the program’s inception in 1983. Nominations are submitted by each student-athlete’s respective institution.
Student-athletes must have accumulated at least 45 semester credit hours or 60 quarter credit hours with a minimum of 3.60 GPA.
