The Alexandria Campus Fine Arts Department has partnered with local organization ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) and will donate 100 handcrafted, one-of-a-kind bowls for Empty Bowls Alexandria.
Empty Bowls Alexandria is scheduled for November 14 at 6:00 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center in Old Town Alexandria. Attendees and donors will enjoy a simple meal and receive one of the handmade bowls made by NOVA students as gifts.
Ceramics Professor Jessica Gardner said she has asked all of her students to take time to help them reach their goal and give back to the community. During the event, Gardner will briefly speak to attendees about NOVA’s Fine Arts Department and the students’ contributions to the event.
“We’ve committed to donating bowls for Empty Bowls Alexandria and we’re hoping this will become an annual event for ALIVE!” Gardner said. “We would like to continue to partner with them and help those in need right here in our own backyard.”
According to ALIVE!, more than 13,500 Alexandria residents live in poverty, and as many as 1 in 5 struggle to put food on the table. This will be the organization’s first year hosting Empty Bowls, which is a grassroots program encouraging collaboration and partnership between local artists and organizations to raise hunger awareness and feed those in need in their communities.
Executive Director Diane L. Charles said their goals are to have about 120 people attend the event in November, raise even more awareness of this local issue and gain support from the community.
“People who want to get involved with ALIVE! can learn a bit more on our website and if they want to volunteer for specific programs, there is contact information for each program,” Charles said. “We also encourage people to reach out to ALIVE’s volunteer coordinator.”
The Empty Bowls Alexandria event already has a number of sponsors including Carluccios, Taverna Cretekous, Los Tios, Great Harvest Bread Company, Alexandria Pastry Shop and Buzz Bakery & Coffee Lounge, Mercedes Benz of Alexandria, Whole Foods of Alexandria, Wiygul Automotive Clinics and Fiske Law Group.
ALIVE! provides food for more than 2,350 people each month as well as shelter and emergency financial assistance among other services. For more information about how you can donate to ALIVE! and Empty Bowls Alexandria or to purchase tickets to the event, visit the organization’s website.
