The Achieving the Dream (ATD) Core Team hosted a campus-wide professional development event on April 1 to enhance communication and awareness of reading and writing across the curriculum. The event was held at the Ernst Center on the Annandale Campus and attended by 53 faculty members from multiple disciplines and support services. The origin of the discussion was a need that has been voiced to better support students in their academic literacy skills. Registration for the session included several survey questions where attendees could voice common concerns regarding the reading and writing needs of students at NOVA.
The faculty panel included the following presenters: Susannah Givens (MA/English), Nicole Tong (AN/English), Alice Reagan (WO/History), Indigo Ericksen (WO/English) and Sarah Bogdewiecz (AN/Writing and Tutoring Center). Each presenter gave a visual presentation and helpful tips to increase student success in college reading and writing. A lively question-and-answer session followed each presentation.
The next portion of the day included roundtable discussion groups and shared activities which were led by Karen Doheney, Ericksen, Givens, Emily Miller, Esther Namubiru, Jennifer Richardson and Cheri Spiegel. These discussions were highly productive and participants voiced a need for further conversation on the topic of student reading and writing. A final reflective activity wrapped up the well-received event.
Future similar professional development opportunities will be discussed by the ATD Core Team. A special thank you to the ATD Core Team members who organized the event: Rashmi Chilka, Givens, Kathy Lloyd, Doheney, Stephen Clarke and Richardson.
